 | | | As part of the National Day celebrations, MyMailMoment.com has obtained the latest insights into day-to-day living in Singapore, including job environment, cost of living, safety, sense of belonging and affection for the country – as well as opinions of gender of its political leaders.
A unique lifestyle research portal, MyMailMoment.com conducted a 2-part online survey of 2,017 Singapore citizens, permanent residents and foreign respondents -- of whom 87% were citizens.
The survey found that two-thirds of respondents expressed satisfaction for Singapore as a place to live in. Similarly, over two-thirds of residents are confident that the quality of life in Singapore will remain good in the next five years, and only less than 10% have a negative view about the same. Key reasons cited for this quality of life include a “low crime rate” and “world-class infrastructure” (80%), although just as many found it to be “expensive” and “life here is stressful”.
Foreigners have similar high ratings for “world-class infrastructure”, “too expensive” and “enjoy living here”. They accorded an even higher rating (90%) to low crime rate.
Overall, the survey results, which can be downloaded from MyMailMoment.com, showed that citizens, permanent residents and foreigners alike demonstrated a strong love for and commitment to Singapore. Nearly three-quarters of Singaporeans and residents “love Singapore“ while slightly more than half “will stay and fight for Singapore in the event of war”. Conversely, despite the strong love for country, if given the opportunity elsewhere, one-third of respondents might be willing to switch their citizenship/PR status.
It is gratifying to note that this high score for “love of country” correlates well with an almost identical score of 76% who stated that “I really love my home”. Chief reasons cited for loving their home were a sociable neighbourhood as expressed by 45% of respondents and this was reinforced by just as many people who attributed the HDB upgrading programme to improved neighbourhood living condition.
Society’s expectation and opinion too, have changed and become more liberal. One in two respondents stated that they would vote for a female presidential candidate.
An even higher percentage of respondents would accept a female candidate as cabinet minister, with an astounding 83% agreeing to this change in gender. The majority perceive that a female cabinet minister is just as capable as her male counterpart. It is also interesting to note that more females than males perceive a female cabinet minister to be more effective than the opposite sex.
The open-ended question on the Spirit of Singapore, is best summed up by a respondent , Diana Teo: “I believe that it is our kiasu attitude which leads to our "never-say-die" and "everything can" attitude, resulting in our striving for the best in even adverse situations. That’s how Singapore survives. Though we may grumble and complain, but in our hearts we know Singapore is still the best”.
